Mommyhood
Before I became a mom, I was a bit of a party animal. I had NO CLUE how to be a mom, I don’t even remember holding a baby or seeing a newborn in real life until the day my own son was born. I was a total rookie, and completely scared. Today I laugh when I think about how clueless I was, but I know there are probably lots of other new moms out there feeling the same way I did.
While you don’t get a handbook or manual with your baby, there are a lot of books and websites out there that can help you learn to adjust your life to accomodate your new baby. It’s hard, especially at first- you struggle with trying to balance your new role while also trying to blend that with the person you were before you had a kid. But, like I said, there’s good information out there in books and on the web that you can read to inform yourself about being a parent and raising your kids.
The best books for rookie moms are: What to Expect the First Year, By Heidi Murkoff, Sandee Hathaway, Arlene Eisnberg and Dr. Spock’s Baby and Childcare: Seventh Edition
Some good parenting websites for new parents are: www.storknet.com, www.investinkids.ca and www.drspock.com.
Being a new mom is challenging, because you have to completely change every part of your life, you have to maintain your new role while trying to be who you were before you were a mom, trying to find time for yourself, and of course, the challenges of sleeping, nursing, changing, colic, puking, bathing, cleaning and cooking!
BUT- you will learn fast, and before you know it, you won’t even remember what life was like before your precious little one came along.
Periodically, I’ll be sharing my tips, thoughts, and ideas on parenting, being a young mom, being a working mom, and balancing your life. Check back often for new “Mommyhood” blog posts.
